Morning Keynote Panel: The Future of the Patient Experience: Consumer Expectations and Industry Response

For many across the United States, 2020 and 2021 have brought new and different healthcare experiences than ever before. For the first time, many patients visited providers virtually, utilized mail order pharmacy services, or used an app to navigate their health records online instead of in person – and such novel approaches to care delivery are shaping the “new normal” of healthcare. Patients are no longer passive participants in their health, instead demanding transparency, convenience, access, and personalized products and services. This panel will discuss how providers, payers, policymakers and healthcare innovators will continue to support the changing landscape and will highlight the main challenges and constraints the industry must confront to create a positive patient experience.

Panel 1A: Digital Innovation and Advanced Analytics in Healthcare

Technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, natural language processing and more are allowing businesses to fundamentally revamp operations and product development. Across healthcare, these advancements are enabling businesses to better address challenges and contribute to more personalized care. In response to these trends, traditional healthcare entities are investing in their digital capabilities internally, through collaboration or M&A. At the same time, the “Big Four” technology companies are also accelerating their pursuit of the healthcare market with different focuses, ranging from cloud services, clinical research via wearables and AI in precision medicine to new models of pharmacy and virtual care. This panel will explore the outcomes, improvements and barriers these companies face in working to ensure innovation meets patient needs.

Panel 1B: Private Equity in Healthcare and the Impacts on Patients

Amid a chaotic year both nationally and globally due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and follow-on effects, private equity deals in healthcare have shown impressive resilience. According to recent research and analysis, healthcare PE deals continue to outpace all other deals – both in volume and value – with the majority of activity focused on the healthcare provider space and biopharmaceutical companies. As total healthcare deal value continues to grow, this panel will pause to explore critical questions about how the growth in PE-backed healthcare companies affects patients – including their health outcomes, their medical bills and their access to important health services.

Panel 2A: Practicing Health and Well-Being Within Healthcare Companies

Healthcare companies across the board have started to center health equity and well-being in their strategic plans and business models. This represents a significant shift, as historically, the burden of population health has fallen to state and local health departments and community organizations. But as more healthcare corporations seek to change health outcomes based on drivers of health, how are they managing to turn value statements into practice? This panel will discuss how various companies have taken on the responsibility to practice health and well-being among the populations they serve – including their employees, their communities and their consumers.

Panel 2B: Public Trust in the Healthcare Sector Amid and Beyond COVID-19

Healthcare in the United States is a perpetually polarizing topic. On one hand, the pandemic showcased how the private and public sectors can work together to advance medicine and save lives. On the other hand, the period shone a spotlight on a number of shortcomings and failures in business and government that fundamentally altered the public perception of the healthcare industry.
